Morning sadness: why does it happen?

Many people report feeling sad in the morning more than at any other time of the day. The sensation sometimes becomes really severe, even coinciding with major depressive disorder. The point is, the feeling wears off as the day goes on. It may even be that none of this emotion remains at night.

This morning sadness is called “morning depression” or “morning depression”. It is specific and, therefore, differs from other types of depression. Its characteristic sign is that it does not appear until the early hours of the day.

The sadness in the morning is sometimes not directly linked to the depression, the cause is different. In addition, it is not always a simple temporary morning blues, but a signal which indicates a more severe pathology.

Sadness in the morning, why?

It has been established that the sadness in the morning is mainly due to three factors. The first is depression. The second, insufficient rest. The third is the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

We talk about morning depression or morning depression when  the symptoms of depression are exacerbated at the start of the day, just after waking up. The person experiences apathy and a feeling of emotional emptiness that does not fade away. The symptoms improve as the day passes, although they do not go away entirely.

A bad night’s sleep is another reason you may feel sad in the morning. You slept, but the sleep was not restful. It is possible that the room conditions are not the most suitable or that you have a health problem that prevents you from sleeping well.

Finally, this feeling of sadness can also be due to the consumption of alcohol the night before. This compound puts you to sleep, but it also changes sleep cycles, interrupting sleep at night. Alcohol is also a nervous system depressant and its effect is felt the next morning.

Morning depression

Of the three reasons cited, the most complex is morning depression. This is a condition that requires special attention because it can be a sign of a disorder or the start of a disorder. The main symptoms of morning depression are:

  • Difficulty waking up or getting out of bed. The eyelids are heavy and the body seems unable to move.
  • Difficulty falling asleep or multiple awakenings at night. This may be due to high cortisol levels at night, which means high nighttime anxiety.
  • Hypersomnia. Some people feel the need to get more sleep than usual for no reason. It can be a symptom of depression, but it isn’t always.
  • Inappropriate eating habits. Eating too much or too little, especially at night, can be a sign of an unbalanced mood.
  • Lack of concentration. You find it difficult to focus on your daily tasks and do various things at the same time, or you struggle to finish what you have started, even if the task is simple.
  • Irritability or feelings of frustration. These feelings are most intense in the morning, but tend to last, to a lesser extent, throughout the day.
  • Loss of interest  and feeling of emptiness.

What to do in this situation?

If the feeling of sadness in the morning is very intense and frequent, you should consider seeing a doctor. One in five people with depression also have sleep apnea. Other health problems can also affect rest.

Night work, especially if it involves a lot of stress, can lead to morning depression. Under these conditions, the body and mind are overloaded, causing an imbalance that can manifest as sadness in the morning.

If there is something that worries you, or if you continually feel a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, you may need psychological help. The sooner you look for it, the more effective it will be. For the rest, apply the measures of good sleep hygiene, in order to get enough rest.
