Secrets Of Eye Contact

Secrets of eye contact

Eye contact is a powerful means of communication. Through the gazes one sends conscious and unconscious messages which exert a great influence in any situation. They are part of this hidden communication which marks the mutual perception. Looks are a world to be deciphered and they deserve to be taken into account.

Eye contact and its interpretation are closely related to the amygdala,  a part of the brain related to emotions. The most fascinating thing about eye contact is that it is both a subtle and striking language.

We are not aware of the way we look at things or people, and sometimes we also do not pay attention to the message we send and the effects that this gaze has on communicating with others. The purpose of this article is precisely to elucidate some interesting points in the wonderful world of looks.

The duration of eye contact, an essential factor

The duration of eye contact is one of the essential elements of communicating through a gaze. For example, a person who completely avoids the gaze of the other is rather disturbed on an emotional level.

The complete absence of eye contact indicates a lack of control over what one feels. In others, it causes a feeling of discomfort and mistrust.

In contrast, we find those who have a fixed gaze and never look away. This type of eye contact indicates to us a desire to control and perhaps even dominate the interlocutor. After a few minutes, this type of gaze can become very intimidating. It suggests the presence of a desire to instrumentalize the other person.

All looks convey a feeling,  even when they are not very expressive. In the latter case, we find the aridity of what has been experienced or the apathy felt.

However,  it is not easy to observe a look. The other person may not feel comfortable. But when we do, we suddenly discover traces of the emotional world of the other.

Research on body language has identified several codes that appear through eye contact. Here are some of the more common interpretations:

  • If the blinking is excessive and noticeable, the person is likely feeling insecure and nervous. People don’t believe in leaders who blink too often.
  • Looking to the left means we are remembering something and looking to the right means we are thinking or reflecting on ideas. If the person is constantly looking away in that direction, it may mean that they are lying. With lefties, it all works the other way around.
  • When someone opens their eyes a little, it means that he / she does not believe  what the other person is saying.
  • If a conversation becomes interesting with the other person, it is usual for you to raise your eyebrows.

Seduction and instinct

Looks also play an important role in seduction. They normally constitute the beginning of what subsequently becomes a romantic bond. Even though contact is made from a distance, there is a certain love interest in the eyes of those involved. For example, it is normal to see them shine more than usual, that the pupil is more dilated or that they reflect more softness.

eye contact of a couple

According to body language experts, interest in the other person is measured as follows:

  • If someone looks you in the eye, lowers their gaze, and looks at you again, that means they’re interested in you.
  • If the person is looking at you, breaking that contact, and looking in a different direction, it means that they are not sure they are feeling the attraction.
  • If eye contact occurs and the person is looking up, it’s very likely that they won’t feel attracted to you at all.
  • When we blink more than ten times a minute, it means that we are attracted  to the person in front of us.

In addition,  animals are also sensitive to humans. If they are angry, they interpret the stare as a defiant stance. Looking away is one way to reduce the possibility of them attacking.

As we see,  gazes constitute a world of endless possibilities. A way of communicating that says a lot about us and that is worth taking into account.
