Tips and advice for brushing your dog

Brushing your dog can be a fun activity that your dog can enjoy. But do you know how to brush a dog, how often and what is the most suitable brush?

In the rest of this article, we’ll share with you some tips and advice that will help you brush your dog.

Why is it important to brush and comb your dog?

Brushing and combing your dog is a hygienic action that will keep your faithful companion healthy. Plus, he loves you brushing him because he loves the touch and attention you give him.

Also, when you comb your dog, you remove any extra hair that he has. If your four-legged boyfriend has long hairs, brushing him helps him have brighter, more beautiful hairs.
In addition, by painting your dog  you will quickly realize if he suffers from skin problems  or other discomforts.

Choosing the right comb

Choosing a comb for your dog is not as easy as you might think. Your best bet is to buy a comb or brush depending on the type of hair your pet has. Try to avoid boar hair combs because if they are not soft they can damage your dog’s skin.

Dog breeds with long hair, such as collies or terriers, should be brushed weekly. A brush with spikes is the best option for these breeds,  as the slant of the boar hair catches the bottom layer and removes dead hair without hurting your dog.

Short-haired dogs, such as Labradors or Spanish Greyhounds, don’t need to be brushed regularly  because their hair doesn’t get tangled as easily. However, you still need to comb them every two weeks to remove the falling hairs.

For this you can use a rubber brush or a glove which helps to attract dirt and hairs that fall to the surface. These gloves that you just have to put on are a great option, as your dog will think that you are petting him, and will not suspect that in reality, you are brushing him.

If your dog has curly hair, like a poodle, it is advisable to brush him regularly  to avoid tangles. To comb it, prefer brushes that have metal peaks. But be careful to comb it gently so as not to hurt it and damage its skin.

Where to start ?

First, give your dog a bath, and shampoo him appropriately. Shampoos for humans, even baby shampoos, have a different pH than what dogs need. Ask your vet what is the best product for your loyal companion.
If your dog suffers from skin problems, it is very likely that he needs a special shampoo.

Once you’ve finished your bath, it’s time to brush up. Start with the head. Although it’s not the hairiest part of her body, this gesture helps the hairs dry faster and make them shinier.

Knots can form behind the ears, which  is why you should pay special attention to this area.
The way of holding the comb is similar to the way of using a brush, that is to say, first comb all its hairs without the direction of growth, then in the opposite direction. This gesture makes the coat shine even more, and saves you time.

You can also start by brushing it from below and then move on to the upper parts of your dog’s body. You have to make gentle and quick gestures.
In addition to the ears, a lot of knots can form on your dog’s tail, legs and “armpits”. If you see knots, start by brushing the tips of the hairs, then work your way up to the roots.

How to remove the knots?

Knots appear in dogs with long hair. In hot climates, the formation process speeds up considerably, which  is why combing them frequently is recommended.

If your dog has knots, you should use a fine comb. Use the tip of the comb to break the knot. Then, little by little, you will be able to untangle its hairs until they are completely smooth.
